'Molecular genetic and epigenetic analysis of osteoarthritis: A functional investigation of a single nucleotide polymorphism associated with female hip osteoarthritis'

- Osteoarthritis, genetics, gene expression -

The genetic architecture of osteoarthritis (OA) is highly complex, with heterogeneous pathological pathways converging on a common end phenotype. The aim of this project was to characterise a female hip OA association signal, marked by the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs4836732, using functional molecular genetic techniques.  Results suggest increased disease risk may be mediated during synovial joint development and have identified PAPPA, encoding a metalloproteinase, as a candidate target gene.
